Honour-based abuse is a crime of control, linked to domestic abuse, committed to protect the honour or reputation of a family, community or faith group. It takes place when the victim is believed to have behaved or spoken in a way that brings shame, dishonor and embarrassment to the community/family/culture/religion and so a punishment is determined to redress the shame. This is often a form of abuse that starts in the home and can start from a young age. The abuse can be emotional, physical (Including sexual), psychological and can result in assault, kidnap, threats, abandonment, forced marriage, suicide and murder through a so called “honour killing”.
