On Shrove Tuesday we opened a pancake shop in Acorns. The children had to choose two ingredients for their pancake and work out the cost. They enjoyed counting the pennies and solving addition problems. Some children were able to use a 10p and pennies to make amounts to 20p. It is lovely to see children making links in their learning. This week we carried out a traffic survey. We counted the different transport that we saw and recorded our data as a tally. We have been learning to group our tally marks into groups of 5. Can you carry out a traffic survey in your local area? How do people travel around? Which type of transport will you see the most?

Acorns have been learning about freezing and melting.we enjoyed using our senses to explore the ice balloons. We asked lots of questions and made observations. We made predictions too! Which ice block do you think will melt first, the big one or the small one?

Our lovely crossing patrol warden sally came into early years to teach us about road safety. We enjoyed having a go at doing her job. Thankyou sally.

We have been working on our physical development. This term we will be completing group tasks to help us to develop our control and coordination in large and small movements. We are working hard to strengthen our arms and shoulders. Did you know that this will help us to control tools such as pencils and scissors? How can you be more active this week? Reception have started learning their phase 3 sounds. They will learn to read and write 26 new sounds! Practice singing the new jolly phonics songs. Can you learn the phase 3 tricky words?

Acorn’s home learning challenges


This week we have learnt to read the sounds e, u and r. We have also learnt to read the tricky words the and my. Can you find the sounds and tricky words in your reading book? 



This week we have been learning about 3D shapes. We looked around our school for 3D shapes in the environment. Can you find 3D shapes around your home? Can you name and describe the shapes that you find?

We celebrated Father Sean’s 70th birthday with a whole school tea party. Happy birthday Father Sean.

This week we have been working hard to form our letters correctly. We are really trying to form each letter in our names correctly. Can you use the practice writing your name?


Your child has been sent home with a blue book that they can practice their writing in. Please use a pencil.

This week the children have learnt the sounds i and n and we are beginning to read simple words using the sounds s,a,t,p,i,n. Can you practice making and reading words using the sounds such as sat, pin, tap, at, in.


We are continuing to recognise numerals to 10 and 20.

This weekend  find things around your house that start with the sounds s, a, t or p. Perhaps you could post a photo on twitter showing what you find. Practice writing s, a, t and p in different places. Can you write big letters in chalk or make them out of play dough or spaghetti? We would love to see your work.

We are also learning to recognise numbers and count to 10. Can you find different numbers in the environment? What does 7 look like? Can you do 7 hops?

Acorns weekend learning challenge


We have been reading lots of teddy bear books this week. We especially enjoyed reading and acting out Goldilocks and the 3 bears. We have been learning to count forwards and backwards and to help us we have been singing 10 in the bed. Please practice singing this song at home. What happens to the number of bears in the bed?
