A fantastic start to Health Week 2016!!
Our Beech children have had a wonderful start to Health Week 2016 with our year group athletic representatives, Olivia L and Alfie L, participating in the Birmingham Catholic Schools Athletics Tournament at Alexander Stadium. The children performed brilliantly in their sprint races with Alfie making it through to the Year 3 final where he finished in 2nd place, a brilliant achievement!
After a brisk and energetic start to the day on the playground with 'Wake Up Shake Up', Beech Class visited Pizza Express in Shirley where they sampled different healthy toppings and then made their own healthy pizza. The children waited for the pizzas to be cooked (of course) and then traveled back to school where they ate their pizzas outside in the sunshine. A fun packed morning of learning and munching!
Our children have also been on exercise bikes this week as we contribute to our school miles target of 654 miles, the equivalent of riding to Lourdes, France.
A number of our lesson this week have focused upon our understanding of healthy eating and what makes a balanced diet. The children have been examining what foods make up the different types of food groups such as protein, carbohydrate and fibre. Later this week we will be examining the nutritional values of foods e.g. the amount fibre, salt and fat contained in a serving of food. Please discuss these values at home, which are found on most food packaging, and ask your children to compare the values. :)
