Primary School’s Sports Premium Funding

Background

As part of the Olympic legacy, the Government is providing funding of £150 million per annum for this and next academic year.  This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, with money going directly to primary schools.  Head teachers have flexibility on how this money is spent but it must be used to improve the quality of sport and PE for all children.

PE at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School

Physical education develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities.  These include dance, games, gymnastics, swimming and water safety, athletics and outdoor adventure activities.  Physical education promotes an understanding in children of their bodies in action.  It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills and promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle.  Thus we enable them to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives.  Here at Our Lady of Lourdes we aim to:

  • To enable children to develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and co-ordination.
  • To encourage children to work and play with others in a range of group situations
  •  To develop the way children perform skills and apply rules and conventions for different activities;
  •  To increase children’s ability to use what they have learnt to improve the quality and control of their performance;
  •  To teach children to recognise and describe how their bodies feel during exercise;
  • To develop the children’s enjoyment of physical activity through creativity and imagination;
  • To develop an understanding in children of how to succeed in a range of physical activities and how to evaluate their own success.

Here at Our Lady of Lourdes we have a long and much celebrated history of playing sport. This funding has allowed us to develop and enhance this provision.

This year we will be using the funding to:

  • Continue to provide every child with a personalised fitness programme. This will not only be integral to their PE lessons but will also provide children with the skills and motivation to improve their fitness outside of lessons;
  • Buy in specialist dance and drama support work for all year bands.
  • Buy in specialist coaches to lead and train pupils as playground pals.
  • Provide non swimmers with swimming
  • Enhance the opportunities for children to play competitive sports.  Funding will be used to provide cover for staff, specialist equipment and help with transport costs. Competitions entered this year include:

-Netball league and cup competitions

-Athletics competition
